Wood Window Restoration in San Francisco and the Peninsula
Original wood windows — the double-hungs and casements in the pre-war housing stock — are nearly always worth restoring. Old-growth frames and wavy glass, brought back to smooth, sealed working order.
How we restore wood windows
Most “broken” wood windows are stuck, not broken. Sashes painted shut get scored free and eased; broken cords and chains get re-roped through the original weight pockets so the sash floats again instead of slamming. Parting beads and stops get replaced where they’re chewed up, and the sash runs smooth on waxed, clean channels.
The wood repairs happen at the sill line, where weather concentrates. Soft sills and sash bottoms get cut back and spliced or epoxy-consolidated, primed on every face, and painted to shed water. Glazing putty that’s cracked and lifting gets cut out and re-glazed so the glass is bedded and sealed — and yes, we save the wavy glass.
Then the part that makes daily life better: weatherstripping. Spring bronze or modern equivalents at the channels, a proper meeting-rail seal, and a sash lock that actually pulls the window tight. A restored window seals surprisingly close to a replacement — without losing the material, the look, or the glass that makes these houses what they are. Doors of the same vintage get the same treatment: eased, re-hung, hardware repaired.
