How we repair fences and gates
Posts first. A failed post gets dug out and reset in proper concrete with drainage at the base, or sistered where the run allows it — and the neighboring posts get checked, because posts installed the same year fail the same decade. Rails and boards are straightforward: matched stock, galvanized or stainless fasteners, cut ends sealed.
Gates are their own small craft. Sag comes from hinges undersized for the weight, screws stripped out of the post, or the gate frame racking out of square. We rehang on hardware that matches the load, brace the frame, and set the latch so it catches the first time, every time — including the side-yard gate everyone has silently fought with for years.
Peninsula fence lines age fast where sprinklers hit them and where fog keeps the bottom course damp. Seasonal tightening and a sealed cut here and there add years to a run that’s fundamentally sound.
